Reading Religion Graduate Salon

Boniuk Institute Reading Religion Graduate Salon

About the Reading Religion Graduate Salon
The Boniuk Institute presents its Reading Religion Salon for interdisciplinary graduate students and postdoctoral fellows at Rice University.

The salon centers a scholarly understanding of religious tolerance, religious graduate salonpluralism and religious discrimination across geographies and disciplines. Over the course of each semester, students collectively examine a selection of current literature on topics related to religious pluralism, tolerance, and understanding, as well as religion in the public sphere, from different disciplinary perspectives. As a group, students consider the ways in which each text expands our understanding of these topics and thoroughly discuss each book with an eye to communicating the content to a non-academic audience.

Salon students receive training in communicating scholarly topics to a public audience by conducting interviews with the books' authors and writing publishable book reviews. In addition, students receive training in how to apply for grants and fellowships, how to attend conferences, and giving accessible public talks.
