Tariq Modood was the 2025 Boniuk Institute Senior Scholar. A leading scholar of multiculturalism, citizenship, and ethnic relations, he is founding director of the Bristol University Research Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship and co-founding editor of the journal Ethnicities. His research in sociology, political philosophy, and public policy focuses on multicultural citizenship, religion in public life, and the governance of ethnic and religious diversity.
Modood has authored or edited more than 35 books and reports and over 250 articles and chapters. His major works include Multicultural Politics: Racism, Ethnicity and Muslims in Britain, Multiculturalism: A Civic Idea, Still Not Easy Being British, and Essays on Secularism and Multiculturalism. He has also co-edited numerous volumes on multiculturalism, migration, secularism, and religious diversity in Europe.
A prominent public intellectual, Modood has advised policymakers and served on major national commissions, including the Commission on the Future of Multi-Ethnic Britain and the Commission on Religion and Belief in British Public Life. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and the Academy of Social Sciences and was awarded an MBE for services to social sciences and ethnic relations.
