Leading Communities within Political Polarization

Steve Bezner

The Boniuk Institute's Religion and Public Life Center hosted a Religious and Civic Leader Gathering at which director Todd Ferguson engaged with guest Steve Bezner of Baylor University about strategies that leaders can use to anchor their communities in values that transcend political and cultural divides. Bezner's remarks invited thoughtful reflection on the spiritual and ethical challenges facing religious communities today. Drawing on years of leadership experience, he explored how modern cultural forces shape, and often distort, the way that people understand and live out their faith.

Bezner noted that, in many contexts, cultural identity and political affiliation can subtly redefine the core principles of a religious tradition. When faith becomes intertwined with these external markers, he argued, its moral and spiritual foundations risk being overshadowed or reshaped by broader societal pressures. He also emphasized that contemporary media and political discourse have become dominant sources of moral formation, often exerting more influence on individuals’ beliefs and behaviors than their own spiritual communities.

Another key theme was the tension between moral integrity and the pursuit of power or comfort. Bezner cautioned that when institutions or individuals prioritize status, influence, or self-protection, they can lose sight of the humility, service, and ethical clarity that sustain credibility and trust.

Ultimately, Bezner encouraged leaders and communities across traditions to re-center themselves on enduring principles rather than partisanship or cultural trends. Compassion, justice, and a commitment to the common good, he suggested, provide a grounded way forward in a time when polarization can easily pull people away from their core commitments.
