    The Boniuk Institute

    The Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance at Rice University is seeking undergraduate research assistants for the Summer/Fall 2018 semester with opportunity for renewal for future semesters. The Institute has a strong multidisciplinary focus, with senior leadership spanning the fields of sociology, anthropology, history and religious studies. The Institute’s mission is to understand and achieve religious tolerance by using innovative methods to 1) conduct academically rigorous research, 2) deliver educational programming to Rice students and the Houston Community, and 3) spearhead community engagement efforts.

    Job Description

    The incumbent will be responsible for undertaking tasks relating to all aspects of the Institute’s mission. Students will interface directly with professors in the social sciences and humanities to execute research projects, organize community engagement activities, and provide support for administrative office tasks. Specifically, this may include:


    • Updating the Institute website
    • Assisting with professional development program preparation
    • Archiving and cataloguing Institute events
    • Creating publicity materials (flyers, brochures, programs, etc)
    • General office work
    • Maintaining contact database

    Research & Writing

    • Generating content for the website
    • Spearheading Institute social media presence
    • Assist with qualitative data compilation and coding
    • Assist with email marketing efforts

    Event Coordinating

    • Assisting with event planning and execution

    Job Requirements

    • All majors are encouraged to apply
    • Strong writing and research skills
    • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
    • Willingness to learn new technologies -- website management (CMS400// Drupal), graphic design (Adobe products// InDesign) and database management (Excel// Access)
    • Be enrolled at Rice University as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior
    • Commit to a consistent weekly schedule of 10 hours a week (up to 20+ hours for summer workers) -- schedule will be based on student's course schedule and availability.  
    • Occasional events or weekend hours as needed surrounding Institute events
