  • Boniuk Institute Founders Honored by the City of Houston

On April 12, 2018, Dr. Milton and Laurie Boniuk, founders of Rice University's Boniuk Institute, were honored by the City of Houston with a proclamation honoring their accomplishments and achievements in support of religious tolerance.  During the Inaugural Event of Rice University's Arts of Tolerance initiative, Terence O'Neill, Director of the City of Houston's Office of New Americans and Immigrant Communities, presented the Boniuks with a proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner designating April 12th as Milton and Laurie Boniuk Day:

"Houston philanthropists Milton and Laurie Boniuk are well known for their passionate advocacy of religious tolerance, with a demonstrated and remarkable commitment to achieving peaceful solutions among all faiths and beliefs. Their interest in promoting religious acceptance was sparked at Baylor College of Medicine, where Milton serves as the Caroline F. Elles Chair of Opthalmology. This interest grew stronger with their affiliation and work with Houston’s newly established Holocaust Museum.

Eager to help people of different faiths, or of no faith, learn to coexist peacefully and respectfully, Milton and Laurie made a gift to Rice University in 2004 to establish a center dedicatd to promoting deeper understanding of religious tolerance in Houston. In 2013, they funded the expansion of the center so it could extend its efforts on a global level. They are also the founders of the Boniuk Foundation, which also supports the mission of promoting compassion, tolerance and respect through its youth programs and its partnership with “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books. Due to their generosity, the Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance now brings together scholars from a range of disciplines to conduct innovative research into religious tolerance, to use that knowledge to make policy recommendations, and to design educational and outreach programs for both young people and adults.

On April 12, 2018, Milton and Laurie Boniuk will be honored for their overall accomplishments and achievements. The City of Houston commends and appreciates Milton and Laurie Boniuk for their many contributions to the community and extends best wishes for continued success.

Therefore, I, Sylvester Turner, Mayor of the City of Houston, hereby proclaim April 12, 2018, as

    Milton and Laurie Boniuk Day
    In Houston, Texas
    "

Congratulations to Dr. Milton and Laurie Boniuk on their receipt of this special honor.  We are truly thankful for their tremendous contributions in support of religious tolerance and peace among all faiths.
