The mission of the Boniuk Institute is to understand and promote religious tolerance by using innovative methods to:
• conduct multidisciplinary, academically rigorous research
• deliver educational programming to Rice University students and the Houston community at large, and provide models for national and international education
• spearhead engagement efforts that foster a dialogue within the Houston community and on a national and global level
The Institute aims to serve as a pre-eminent academic organization that reaches beyond the Rice campus to have an impact locally, nationally, and globally.
The Boniuk Institute was founded in 2013
with a $28.5 million gift from Houston philanthropists Dr. Milton and
Laurie Boniuk. It is an expansion of the Boniuk Center that was created
at Rice in 2004 with a $5 million gift from the Boniuks. The Boniuk
Center was dedicated to nurturing tolerance among people of all and no
faiths, especially youth, and to studying the conditions in which
tolerance and intolerance flourish. The Boniuk Institute’s expanded
mission will focus on research, education, and community engagement.
